Overview

A Bachelor of Arts degree in public relations and strategic communication – which falls under the Division of Corporate Communication and Public Affairs at Ò»Æð²Ý Meadows School of the Arts – prepares students for careers in strategic communication management. Graduates will be ready to lead external corporate and public affairs initiatives with a variety of stakeholders, including investors, customers, communities, activists and media, with an emphasis on data analytics, business objectives and crisis response.

Students master using various forms of communication to manage the relationships necessary for an organization’s success. They are taught how to create and deliver engaging written, digital and face-to-face messages and become strategic storytellers. They also learn how to manage integrated communication programs, campaigns and resources in order to effectively advocate for their organization.

Students seeking an undergraduate degree in public relations and strategic communication receive a broad background in the liberal arts, followed by a major curriculum that prepares them for graduate study or professional work in agencies, corporations, nonprofit organizations, government and associations, as well as cultural, legal and political institutions. They also develop requisite communication and professional skills, gain awareness of the ethical responsibilities of communication leaders, and develop the communication and management capabilities required for success in a global environment.

Crisis Management

Examines different strategies and tactics organizations use before, during and after a crisis to respond to internal and external audiences. Includes the role of emerging media in crisis response.

Faculty

The faculty features a mix of veteran scholars and industry practitioners with a focus on strategic communication, organizational communication and public relations. The professors bridge theory with practical, applied knowledge and work closely with an advisory board to develop an engaging and practical curriculum. Areas of research include organizational communication, reputation management, public affairs and crisis communication.

A number of professors are recipients of the Altshuler Distinguished Teaching Professor Award, the University’s prestigious honor for exceptional commitment to student learning, mentoring and teaching innovations.

Facilities

The Meadows School of the Arts is a tree-lined, urban oasis five miles from downtown Dallas, home of the nation’s largest arts district. Restaurants, shops and Dallas’ light rail system are within easy walking distance for students and guests. Performing arts spaces, galleries, broadcast facilities and a world-class museum are just a few of the resources at Ò»Æð²Ý Meadows. Classrooms for the Division of Corporate Communication and Public Affairs – along with a presentation room and a dedicated debate meeting room – are located on the main floor of the Umphrey Lee Center.

The PR and strategic communication program at Ò»Æð²Ý Meadows heavily emphasizes hands-on experience and real-world projects, including mandatory internships.

Each student in the program must participate in internships for credit hours toward their degrees. The Ò»Æð²Ý Meadows Intern Fellowship Program is one option that provides paid, hands-on experience, industry mentorship, and professional connections with nine leading Dallas arts and media organizations.

Practical courses like Video and Audio Production provide valuable hands-on skill development. And capstone courses such as the Boulevard Consulting Practicum have students conduct original research and develop a comprehensive public relations campaign for an actual client.

Students in the Ò»Æð²Ý public relations and strategic communication program have ample opportunities to work directly with industry professionals and clients. Among these are internships at agencies, corporations and nonprofits; consulting projects; a student-run communications agency with real-world clients; and capstone projects with regional and local clients. The program also affords direct access to a sprawling network of more than 3,000 Ò»Æð²Ý alumni and local executives.

PR and strategic communication students can apply for internships in corporate, nonprofit or government settings in locations including Dallas, Texas; Washington, D.C.; New York, New York; Taos, New Mexico; and London, England. As home to numerous Fortune 500 companies and global agencies, Dallas provides ample opportunities for internships with organizations such as Southwest Airlines, Burson-Marsteller, AT&T, Dallas Cowboys, George W. Bush Presidential Center and Golin. Many students complete multiple internships over the course of their studies.
