The William P. Clements Department of History at 一起草 offers . The courses of study explore the human historical experience in American, global and comparative perspectives, with individualized specializations in transnational themes, such as borderlands, nationalism, democracy, gender and capitalism.

The department emphasizes advanced work on the southwestern United States, the West, Native Americans, ethnic Mexicans, U.S. presidents and colonial history. Moreover, the department boasts topical and methodological expertise in global/comparative history, cultural history, digital humanities and the history of gender.

But students may pursue other individualized specializations in coherent global fields of study, approved by the Graduate Committee and mentored by appropriate faculty.

The master’s degree is offered on two tracks: U.S. history and global history.

Students in the U.S. history track inaugurate their study in the context of global/comparative history and historiography, and they develop their knowledge of the United States in graduate coursework and develop their specific interests in either two research papers or a thesis.

Students in the global history track usually begin their studies with introductions to historiography as well as global and comparative history, followed by graduate coursework on the histories of various areas of the world, with specific topics developed in either two research papers or a thesis.

Students may develop their interests by working with faculty knowledgeable in classical history, medieval history, early modern and modern Europe, Russia, the Islamic world, sub-Saharan Africa, the Atlantic world, Latin America, East Asia, and South Asia, as well as the various regions, periods and themes of the United States.

We help students build their cultural competency, critical thinking and global skill sets to best prepare them for life after graduation. As an M.A. in history graduate student, you’ll learn how to think creatively and critically, conduct research, analyze complex material, make persuasive arguments and communicate your ideas effectively.

Students may attend full time or part time. Full-time graduate students complete the M.A. in history within two years.

Yes. The master’s degree requires 30 credit hours at the 6000 level and is offered on two tracks: U.S. history or global history. Students on both tracks must take 24 credit hours of coursework. For the remaining six credit hours, students on both tracks choose between the thesis option and the non-thesis option, as described .
